Cultural Differences in the Workplace: Australia and US Tim Johnson Anthropologist, James Downs, defined culture as â€Å"a mental map which guides us in our relations to our surroundings and to other people† (Linsell, 2011). This definition supports the idea that culture influences the way in which individuals behave. America and Australia are connected in many ways, and both countries’ success is blatantly predominant even at a quick glance. Both countries are far more superior to the majority of countries around the globe, and a reason for that is their culture sets higher standards in their attempts to continue towards greatness. Although there are many similarities between the Australian and U.S. workplace culture, there are characteristics that illustrate the distinctions between the two cultures. The United States and Australia have very similar upbringings, which is the result of their ties to the British colonies. The United States was formed as a result of immigrants fleeing from religious persecution, while Australia was settled by government workers and convicts. Both countries have similar cultures because the ancestors were predominantly Anglo- Saxon/ Caucasians, and both â€Å"cultures grew through liberal immigration policies† (Linsell, 2011). The reason both nations illustrate similarities in culture is because they share connection to British involvement. The Australian workplace culture differs from most, but Australia has found ways to promote excellence while still promoting happiness. Australia has a community-oriented heritage and is supporters of egalitarianism (Linsell, 2011). Egalitarianism can be defined as equality for all of man with respect to economics, politics, and society. The Australian workplace is also very multicultural, and one in every 4 workers is from another culture (â€Å"Spectrum MRC†, 2012). Australia also embraces different practices compared to the United States. These practices are reflected in their sometimes informal business meetings and interviews. The informality can be illustrated through their non-verbal communication such as proximity when interacting and body language (â€Å"Spectrum MRC†, 2012). To an outsider the Australian workplace culture may seem informal, but within many domestic organizations this is common practice. Australian organizations prefer autonomy and flexibility in the workplace (Linsell, 2011), because it promotes a positive atmosphere that results in higher productivity. The United States workplace culture is centered on command- control leadership and is hierarchy based, because equality is not deemed as important (Linsell, 2011). The hierarchy that the U.S. practices creates competition within the workplace to strive for success, while endorsing a selfish mentality among the employees. The United States takes a â€Å"business first approach†, and favors when employees separate their business and personal lives (â€Å"U.S. Business Culture†, 2011). This approach statistically encourages a more focused workplace, but at the cost of employees not finding enjoyment in their work and with their colleagues. To this day, America is still commonly referred to as â€Å"The Melting Pot† even though the individuals that use this term do not know the true origin. This term was coined in the beginning of the 20th Century to characterize how the immigrants were all mixing together and creating one blended culture. Most individuals improperly use the term to describe different cultures simply living among one another. Australia is wonderful because there are so many diverse cultures, but all of the cultures remain unique and avoid merging in to one. The lack of combining promotes individuality, which aids in the citizens and in turn the employees becoming better developed and appreciative of their positions. The American culture is about demonstrating assertion and never displaying weakness, because weakness is commonly associated with failure. Even though the United States exhibits superiority and their practices are effective, they sacrifice the personal connections that aid to create higher team morale. The workplace culture of Australia and the U.S. take different approaches to how they operate their organizations, but similarities overlap in both cultures. The similarity that is predominant in both countries is the controversy of gender inequality (Leahy, 2011). Currently women in the workforce aren’t â€Å"able to access and enjoy the same rewards, resources, and opportunities† (Workplace Gender Equality Agency, 2013) that men receive in the same workplace. Even in modern society discrimination still resonates and women are unfairly forced to deal with this injustice. The term most commonly used to describe the gender inequality present in the workplace is â€Å"the glass ceiling† (Cotter, Hermsen, Ovadia, Vanneman, 2001). The glass ceiling alludes to a woman’s ability to see to a further point than she can actually reach. Even if the average woman attempted to work towards a higher ranking position, she will typically come across difficulty when tryi ng to advance to that position. Women are still facing discrimination in employment (Doughney, 2007) and more men reach higher paid executive and specialized positions (Ross-Smith McGraw, 2010). Australia and the United States have similarities and differences, but even though they are both global leaders they still have room to expand and change from their current discriminatory practices. My experience in an Australian workplace has been eye opening and led me to a culture that has many positive differences from my own. An aspect of Australian culture that differs from my experiences in the United States is the desire to promote a community based workplace. At Greenwood Dental the employees were completely welcoming and personable; this was the beginning to my acceptance in to their workplace family. After interning for a few days, they began to see my hard work ethic and my willingness to assist anyone’s needs. My determination to benefit their business in any way possible illustrated to them that I was serious about becoming a part of their team, and from that point on I was viewed as a team member. A prime example of their communal persona is seen in their lunch break room. The break room has qualities similar to a family room in a household and they also bring food for everyone to share. This may not seem like much, but promoting this type of workplace led to a productive and friendly environment. Typically in the United States, everyone keeps to themselves and does their own work, but in Australia they believe in a civic based culture. Australian culture favors equality and during my time at Greenwood, I never felt underappreciated or like an outsider. In the U.S. it is very common to feel isolated and unacknowledged, because everyone is trying to advance themselves instead of working collaboratively. All the employees know their position within the company and that the dentists are the priority, but everyone’s position is necessary in order to run a successful business. Greenwood Dental was made up of many different cultures and it was exciting working with such a diverse group of individuals. It is imperative that individuals submerge themselves in additional cultures in order to understand others and even more importantly develop themselves. Greenwood Dental’s staff consists of employees from seven different countries, so being immersed in such a culturally rich environment aided my development towards better understanding and respect for equality. Australia and the United States come from related backgrounds and as a result the cultures share comparable characteristics, but when analyzing workplace culture the distinction is tremendously clear. The Australian workplace culture tends to be more communal and flexible, while the U.S. encourages hierarchy and competition. A positive workplace culture is a result of motivation, productivity, quality work, and retention (â€Å"Building a Positive†, 2013) and in my opinion Australia is better at acquiring the positive workplace with respect to America. Australian culture strives for positivity and satisfaction, while the United States attempts to improve only their economic status. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, once said, â€Å"Happiness is not the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort†. After my experiences in Australia, I can assert that Australia’s workplace with respect to the U.S. has a more positive, enjoyable, and overall better atmosphere to be a part of. Less than a year later, Wagner’s mother married Ludwig Geyer, who Wagner believes is his real father, even though nothing was ever proved. Geyer, like Wagner had an artistic gift. He was an actor a painter, dramatist, and singer. As a child, Geyer was determined â€Å"to make something† of Wagner (Jacobs 3). He failed at drawing and painting. Wagner did not realize he had a talent until Geyer was on his deathbed with collapsed lungs.

Importance of Eating Breakfast Essay

Each person has a different ritual to start the day. Some might think that their day hasn’t started without having a cold shower, others demand watching the news, and there might be others paying attention to shallower things like wearing perfume before going out. That is perfectly fine. But, do these people include breakfast in their rituals? What number of people says that they can’t get out of the house without having breakfast first? Is the breakfast something essential to start a good day? Yes. The body can be compared with a car. It needs fuel to run. It must be fuelled several times each day to function efficiently. In the morning, after many hours without food, it is primordial to refuel it to provide the necessary energy to go through the first part of the day successfully. Eating the first meal of the day is one of the most important things a person should do in the morning. Families should inculcate the knowledge about the importance of it. Media marketing should be more devoted to teach people how to begin a morning. People in general should be more responsible about their health. Nowadays, it is a concern to see how many people make the mistake of getting high-sugar and high-fat foods for breakfast, or even worst, skip it, without considering the consequences. People show the level of importance they give to breakfast in their morning habits. There are three kinds of thoughts regarding breakfast. The first one can be shown by a person who is aware of his/her health. This type of person knows that the breakfast gives a rewarding feeling to the body, and that’s the correct way to start a day. In their kitchens, they might have a slice of wheat bread with eggs, joined by fresh fruit and a cup of natural orange juice waiting to be eaten. According to Cindy Maynard, dietician and a health medical writer, in her article â€Å"Start Your Day with a Breakfast Boost. † She says that eating breakfast improves the ability to concentrate and weight control, reduces the risk of heart disease, and increases strength and energy. This will be likely to occur if the body receives the correct food. Generally, health professionals recommend eating a breakfast consisting of protein, whole grains, and fruits. It makes sense to ingest these things after spending the entire previous night without food. If the body and the brain don’t obtain the correct food, they are not going to function as good as they could because they have no energy or strength to perform right. Healthy food is what the body and the brain need to function in the most optimal way, and it will keep the stomach satiated until the next meal. Other kinds of persons claim eating breakfast, but do they specify what kind of food are getting? Here is where the second thought about breakfast is demonstrated. They usually get the foods that should be avoided because they are high in sugar, sodium, and saturated fats. They have the mistaken belief that a sweet cup of coffee, a muffin or bacon and sausage can be considered a good breakfast. In their minds, they may think that because they have eaten something, they are starting the day well. However, they may also wonder why they are hungry at mid-morning, and why their energy boost doesn’t last very long even after having consumed breakfast. Making a poor choice of breakfast will give an extremely short energy boost that will make the body feel tired and hungry again after a short period of time. This is pancreas’ fault, which responded to the huge amount of sugar introduced in the bloodstream producing insulin in order to bring the levels of glucose back down to a reasonable amount. Also, the long term effect on health for these people can be guessed. Finally, the third thought about breakfast is from people that don’t take breakfast as a serious business, and they choose the worst decision: skipping breakfast. These people neglect the first meal of the day saying silly excuses like they lack of time. They prefer to spend extra time sleeping or finding the perfect outfit, maybe they are following the latest diet trend, or they are just feeling no hunger. They don’t know the harm they are making to themselves. When the body doesn’t have energy, there are more probabilities of feeling tired, dizzy, and irritable, or having poor concentration. These people are likely to find themselves craving for something later because the body is asking for an energy boost. It is possible that they become so hungry that they will be eating more at one or two meals than other people eat in three or four. Busy lifestyles, wearing a good outfit or sleeping more should not impede health. The problem can be solved if the breakfast is planned. For those who don’t feel hungry after waking up, they should try eating small bits of food and then slowly increase their intake as their system grows accustomed to it. Also, they have to stop eating meals late in the evening. This leaves food in the stomach the next morning and prevents them from being hungry when they first wake up. Breakfast skippers haven’t learned how to start a good day. Their excuses for skipping breakfast are trivialities. Jim Rohn once said, â€Å"If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse. † It seems like that quote was written for them. It is time to form healthier habits that will benefit the body and improve its well-being. The time to break bad habits has come. Eating breakfast is the way that happiest days start. There are a lot of breakfast options that fit to people’s lifestyles. It is better to wake up earlier and have a nutritious breakfast that going out without eating anything. The body and the brain will appreciate it. Finally, for those who are not yet convinced of the importance of breakfast, they should try an experiment. They must eat a good and healthy breakfast for an entire week, and then try another week skipping it. Thereafter, they should analyze and make a comparison about how they felt each week including aspects like mood, energy and strength. There’s a great probability of feeling a difference believe it or not. The body will notice the difference and the brain will say that mothers and nutritionist were right about breakfast.

Mischievous and popular Essay

Puck also known as Robin Good Fellow plays an extremely entertaining part in Shakespeare’s â€Å"a midsummer’s night dream†. He is no ordinary character; he enjoys playing practical jokes on mortals. Oberon the King of fairies (also his master), seems to admire Puck because Puck keeps Oberon amused with his antics. In this essay, I will be focusing on Pucks character and how he is amusing, mischievous and popular. The following extract from a midsummer’s night dream is particularly appropriate because it describes how amusing Puck finds the events that proceed during the play. It also gives you an idea of what the events are. â€Å"And those things do best please me that befall preposterously†. During the play puck finds the events that take place astonishingly humorous. It shows that he finds the incident comical because in the text it quotes â€Å"those things do best please me†. Another example is that he finds the matter ridiculous, ludicrous and absurd. â€Å"†¦ that befall preposterously†. In addition Shakespeare portrays Puck as a mischievous spirit, â€Å"Mislead night wanderers laughing at their harm†. This suggests that Puck is childish yet naive. I think Puck has a limited understanding of the consequences of his jesters. This quote also indicates that Puck is not vile but in turn immature. â€Å"†¦ laughing at their harm†. When mortals are in danger, instead of helping them, he will make the situation direr. He is innocent minded. â€Å"Mislead night wanderers†¦ â€Å". Furthermore, although Puck is a servant of King Oberon, he is popular due to his cunningness and wit. This is shown in the text. â€Å"Or else you are that shrewd and knavish spirit called Robin Good Fellow†. This implies that Puck is enormously popular that he has his own nickname. Fairies have heard of him even though he doesn’t know them. His quality is so vibrant. In the quote, Puck is identified as shrewd because puck is crafty, astute and wise. He is also acknowledged as knavish, in other words an unprincipled servant. From the play we can tell that Puck is a mystical being. This should be represented in his clothes. In my opinion, I imagine Puck wearing enigmatic clothes such as a white sparkling garment with golden wings. It could also be represented in his speech. Shakespeare depicts Puck as a mischievous, amusing and popular character through his excellent choice of words. This gives a chance for the reader to empathize with the devious Puck.
